2010 Hall of Fame

2010 Hall of Fame Inductees

Robert Mooney, Program Builder

Bob has been instrumental in the organization, coaching, and day-to-day activity of not just one team but several in the North Area. Being the father of two Special Olympics Utah athletes, he has always been a parent and coach that everyone looks to for help and guidance. Beginning with the Davis Angels then to Weber State University Wildcats and also helping out with the North Area Golf program, he is available for athletes, parents, fellow coaches and Special Olympics staff at all times giving assistance when and where needed. Recently moving into the Head of Delegation role within the Weber State team, he accepted the additional responsibilities with enthusiasm and pride. He also helps with all of the major fundraising efforts of the team, the area and even on the state level.

William J. "Pete" Alvey, Athlete

Years of experience, uncountable medals and ribbons, unstoppable enthusiasm, strength of character! These are just some of the attributes that have been used to describe this athlete. He is all of this and more – this great man not only loves participating in Special Olympics Utah, he wants to make sure that everyone around him loves it just as much. He sets an example to his fellow athletes of good sportsmanship, perseverance, compassion and kindness. He offers his assistance to his coaches and leaders for any events or fund raising endeavors. Last year he acquired a pig and fattened it up for the county fair, he then sold it at the auction to raise money for his South area team. This took a major commitment of time and money. About three years ago he became a global messenger, trained to speak on behalf of the athletes and he has certainly taken this new assignment to heart. He is an advocate for other athletes at all times. He speaks to groups and businesses promoting Special Olympics and recruiting funds, volunteers and services to enhance Special Olympics Utah services. Throughout his life he has been told he couldn’t do things and he has always had a “can do” attitude, usually proving them wrong.

2010 Hall of Fame Award Recipients

Janet Q Lawson Inspire Greatness Award
Maverik, Inc

The Janet Q. Lawson Inspire Greatness Award is presented to those organizations that have inspired the continuing growth of Special Olympics Utah.  Since 2004, Maverik has partnered with the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Utah. Through their Adventure Club Cards promotions, which are printed with the Special Olympics Utah logo, they donate fuel cards. They host a golf tournament to benefit the athletes and they have sponsored this event, the Hall of Fame, for 5 years. This year they included Special Olympics Utah in a national “Convenience Store” convention which brought an additional $15,000 to the organization. Over the years Maverik has donated nearly $90,000 to Special Olympics Utah and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Lifetime Giving Award
UPS Foundation

The UPS Foundation has been a fantastic partner of Special Olympics Utah. For the past 8 years they have been involved with the Utah Open, which is one of Special Olympics Utah’s top special events of the year. The foundation has also been active as part of the World’s Largest Truck Convoy, putting several trucks into the convoy to help make that event a success. For the last two years during the Torch Run Final Leg they have delivered the “Flame of Hope” in their Flame Truck, which has been a huge hit. I am proud to present this year’s “Lifetime Giving” Award to UPS Foundation. We welcome Ms. Carolee Streeper Human Resource Manager for the Desert Mountain Region of UPS, to the podium on behalf of UPS Foundation.

Outstanding Corporate Sponsor
TD Ameritrade

This past summer, the second Special Olympics National Games were held in Lincoln, Nebraska. Fifty-three athletes from Utah proudly represented our state and made a lasting impression on their national colleagues. TD Ameritrade, and TD Bank, played a huge role in the success of the 2010 National Games, raising over $1 million nationwide to support the Games. Here in Utah, TD Ameritrade provided a $25,000 grant in support of the athletes of Team Utah. Additionally, nearly 200 local TD Ameritrade employees volunteered at our Summer Games at BYU. It is this type of corporate support, in terms of both dollars and the commitment of time that exemplifies what partnership is all about. TD Ameritrade also represents our efforts as an organization to secure new sponsors each year, and to the further growth of our mission on behalf of our outstanding athletes. We deeply appreciate their confidence in our efforts and their support of our vital purpose.
